iHEAL in Context

Testing the Effectiveness of a Health Promotion Intervention for women who have experienced intimate partner violence

Western University, in partnership with the University of British Columbia and University of New Brunswick, developed and evaluated a health promotion intervention designed to support women who are in the transition of separating from an abusive partner. iHEAL is delivered by community health nurses and a community partner (such as a domestic violence worker or Indigenous Elder) who work in partnership with women over a 6-month period. Workshops and one-on-one meetings help women develop confidence, knowledge and skills relating to safety, health, relationships, community connections and basic resources. The project is also supporting the integration of trauma-informed approaches into community and provincial programs to improve services for survivors of family violence.
