Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Database
The Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Database is a resource created to enhance understanding of the funding landscape of the GBV sector across Canada. This database provides information on the location, funding, and staffing of charitable organizations that engage in GBV services. It was constructed to support researchers, policymakers, advocates, and organizations committed to advancing gender equity and addressing GBV in Canadian communities.
About the Database
The GBV Database is built from information reported by Canadian charitable organizations on the T3010 form, submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Organizations included in this database indicated in their descriptions that they engage in activities related to gender-based violence.
- Organizational Scope: Includes both GBV-focused and other charitable organizations that may only allocate a small part of their funding or activities to GBV work. Note: Not-for-profit organizations are not all included in this database due to the absence of T3010 data.
- Data Integrity: This data is unverified beyond CRA reporting. Any inaccuracies, omissions, or context-specific outliers within the T3010 data remain as reported to the CRA.
Access and Responsible Use:
The database is freely accessible. However, responsible use requires that the data be considered in conjunction with strong understanding of the complexities of service in the GBV sector including the balance of charitable and not-for-profit organizations in the area/region being considered, the ways in which GBV service are, or are not, embedded in multi-service agencies, and the geographic reach of individual organizations (i.e., multi-site service, satellite offices). The database is using data from T3010 forms submitted by organizations across Canada and is dependent on descriptions of work provided by these organizations. Gender-based violence work may be identified in an organization description but may be only a small piece of the work of an organization. Other organizations may not have explicitly identified GBV work in their descriptions. As a result, some outliers may exist within the database that must be considered contextually.
