SUSTAINABILITY WORKING GROUP MEETINGS

The Mid-term evaluation of the Knowledge Hub identified Sustainability as a topic of interest and concern
among Community of Practice members. In response, a Sustainability Working Group was formed, and three
online meetings were held between December 2024 and February 2025.

At the first working group meeting, held December 4, 2024, participants shared their motivations for
attending the meeting and their connection to the topic of sustainability. Four projects are approaching the
end of their funding agreement with the Public Health Agency of Canada in March 2025, and sustainability of
programs after the funding period is an ever-present concern. Participants emphasized the need to explore
strategies for continuing these programs with limited funding while maintaining their impact. The meeting
explored various aspects of sustainability and the Program Sustainability Assessment Tool (PSAT), was
introduced.

Program Sustainability Assessment Tool PSAT – PSAT/CSAT

- Designed to evaluate program sustainability capacity across 8 domains
- Tailored for a broad range of public health programs
- Rigorously tested at both community and state levels, ensuring its reliability and adaptability.
- Complete the assessment online and receive a summary report of overall sustainability
- Available in English and Spanish

At the next meeting held on January 15, 2025, insights from a review of final reports from projects within the previous investments were shared. Examples of sustainability were sorted into five categories:

- Sustaining knowledge
- Sustaining effective programs
- Scaling programs
- Sustaining collaboration
- Sustaining Impacts

Final reports from the first investment group are available on project pages on the KH website: Project Profiles (2015-2022) -Knowledge Hub -Western University:

Sustainability

Four pathways to sustainability were explored:

1. Research to Practice Pathway
2. Advancing a political agenda
3. Funding Pathways, Costing Analysis, and Sustainability
4. Foundations and private funding.

Discussions were facilitated with a whiteboard where each member added comments and ideas about the pathway identified.

The February 12, 2025, meeting focused on strategies for securing sustainable funding for various initiatives, including exploring alternative funding sources and improving sustainability plans in funding applications. Participants shared experiences and challenges related to program sustainability, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, community connections, and government coordination. The group also discussed concrete suggestions to support instructions related to sustainability in future funding applications.

Next steps

The Knowledge Hub team is conducting interviews with projects from the previous investment to gather information about how sustainability has looked after the investment from PHAC. We will share our learnings from these interviews, the working group meetings and our literature review with CoP members in a final report in the coming months. As always, we encourage CoP members to provide feedback on any specific aspects of sustainability they want to explore further.
