Knowledge Hub Bulletin 33 - December 2024
Project Knowledge Mobilization and Translation activities
The Trauma-informed Community of Practice is comprised of 24 trauma- and violence-informed intervention projects funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada who are evaluating interventions that have the goal of improving health and well-being of people who have experienced various forms of gender-based violence including child abuse, elder and intimate partner violence. Many of the Trauma-Informed Community of Practice projects have completed or are nearing completion of program delivery activities and data collection. Some projects will be completed as soon as March 2025. The focus is now turning to knowledge mobilization and translation activities – to share what has been learned with a wider audience and perhaps to support longer-term sustainability.
Knowledge mobilization is the reciprocal and and complementary flow and uptake of research knowledge between researchers, knowledge brokers and knowledge users – both within and beyond academia... and ultimately has the potential to enhance the profile, reach and impact of social science research. Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council
Knowledge translation is about raising knowledge users’ awareness of research findings and facilitating the use of those fundings. Guide to Knowledge Translation Planning at CIHR: Integrated and End-of-Grant Approaches - CIHR
Knowledge mobilization is a term used to refer to a wide range of activities that include the synthesis, adaptation, dissemination and active exchange of knowledge. Knowledge mobilization activities can inform public debate, policies, and /or practice; and enhance or improve service. Similarly, knowledge translation focuses on sharing results of research with people who the research was intended to support. Examples of knowledge mobilization and knowledge translation include training, symposia, conference presentations, and written activities such as journal articles and other publications.
This Bulletin focuses on some of the knowledge mobilization and knowledge translation activities that Trauma-Informed Community of Practice projects have produced or are currently implementing. Please share with us what your project is doing.
Sharing in the Healing Journey – Education Day
Sharing in the Healing Journey project is implementing and evaluating programming for mothers and children who have experienced domestic violence through 2 programs: Adventures in Sharing is a new arts-based program offered to moms and their children after they have completed the Here to Help program.
The Sharing in the Healing Journey project team including Melissa Foong, Maria Palma, and Pauline Paterson, and their team at YWCA Toronto held an expressive arts training event on October 25, 2024 in Toronto. The training included a lively and interactive morning session with Cheryl Ann Webster of the Canadian International Institute of Art Therapy where staff and other stakeholders learned ways to incorporate art therapy into their work with groups and individuals. The first half of the afternoon focused on using art as a mechanism for self-care for practitioners led by Carol Barrett. In the last half of the afternoon, Dr. Stephanie Begun and her team shared some of the findings from the evaluation of Sharing in the Healing Journey. Presenters also shared the short video about Sharing in the Healing Journey created by the KH in collaboration with the YWCA. The day was a big success and a terrific knowledge mobilization initiative. Kudos to Melissa, Maria, and Pauline for a job well done!
Kids Club Moms Empowerment (KCME) - Symposium
The KCME project hosted a symposium on November 28, 2024 in Moncton, New Brunswick. The day was filled with presentations and activities to share information about the program, outcomes for participants, and testimonials from participants. Time was spent exploring how to make this program sustainable with partners and how it may be rolled out in other organizations across New Brunswick.
KCME Program Participants’ feedback
What KCME has done for me and my son in time of need was Amazing! It was a safe space for myself and my little man to go to and not feel like we were the only ones going through the traumas we did! Myself and my son always looked forward to going to our sessions weekly.
We met some other moms and kids from the community who were going through similar situations and gave me the courage to do things I may have not done if I did not partake in this program! I would recommend this to any mom going through similar situations as spreading awareness is key for me.
Boussole - online training
The Boussole project is a sexual violence prevention training and education program for children aged 6 to 12 years and their families, developed by Marie-Vincent. A 9-hour training program is being offered free to community workers beginning in January 2025 and is available online or in-person. The course is only available in French. Upon completion of the training, participants will receive a toolkit of activities and resources to facilitate the program in their own organization. STEP - ASTRA training
The STEP project offers programming to pregnant women who may have experienced child abuse or witnessed intimate partner violence and may have concerns about pregnancy and parenting. ASTRA (Trauma-informed care in the Perinatal Period) takes what has been learned in delivering the STEP program to create a training program for service providers who are interested in trauma-sensitive apporaches to care and services during pregnancy. The training will be available in French and subsequently in English. To be informed of training availability, join the mailing list: bit.ly/m/astraperinatal

Knowledge Hub site visits
Recently, members of the Knowledge Hub had the privilege of visiting with some Community of Practice members to learn more about their projects. On October 25, 2024, we attended the Sharing in the Healing Journey symposium hosted by Pauline Paterson, Maria Palma and Melissa Foong of the YWCA Toronto. The day was full of arts-based activities and knowledge translation related to the program evaluation.
We recently travelled to the Maritimes where we had a lovely lunch meeting with Catrina Brown from the Safety and Repair project. Catrina Brown is adapting the Safety & Repair Approach to gender-based violence program from the Bridges Institute in Nova Scotia into an online environment. This program is delivered to people who use violence in their families or intimate relationships. The project is collecting data in four maritime provinces.
We had the pleasure of meeting with Kathleen Allen, Danie Gagnon, and Lori Weeks from the AIM study and toured the Muriel McQueen Ferguson Centre for Family Violence Research (MMFC) in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Both the Centre for Research & Education on Violence against Women & Children (CREVAWC) and MMFC are members of the Alliance of Canadian Research Centres on Gender-Based Violence. It was pretty special to be able to meet with Kathleen and Danie so close to the anniversary of December 6th .
Anna-Lee attended the Kids Club & Moms Empowerment Symposium on November 28, 2024. CoP members Ginette Landry and Julie-Pier Montreuil hosted an engaging day which thoroughly explained the programs. Cathy Holtmann shared results from the pre and post assessments completed by participants. Chloe Sirois, Chloe Smith and Julie-Pier shared reflections on their experiences facilitating the program. It was a great opportunity to meet GBV workers from across New Brunswick who are looking for programming for their clients.
KH story
We have developed a story that describes and highlights the work and impact of the Knowledge Hub and the trauma- and violence-informed Community of Practice. The story is based on the KH team’s work and experiences as well as the data from the recent mid-term evaluation of the CoP. We have weaved research findings into narratives to make the data and our work accessible, interesting, and to help people understand what we do and how we do it.
The fictional characters in this story bring our work to life and highlight the objectives of the KH and CoP, showcase the range of projects and expertise within the community, and demonstrate the impact of our work. Additionally, we have highlighted the types of activities that the KH and CoP engage in, including the resources and outputs that we have developed together.
The story includes composite characters, or fictionalized versions of real people, made by combining details from multiple individuals. This allows individual identities to be kept confidential while still allowing for the sharing of broad trends and experiences captured in the research data and team experiences. The quotes, however, are real, and demonstrate the themes pulled from the data that have been weaved into the narratives.
The story can be accessed below as a video.
